She got the call at about three o'clock in the morning from Jack. The normally crotchety old man had sounded breathless -- excited? -- over the phone. Ignoring the fact that she had to be at work in four hours, Leora threw on some clothes and drove far too fast to the barn.

When she got there, the deed had already been done. As Leora flew into the stable, Jack lifted a finger to his mouth to indicate desired silence. The girl winced apologetically and closed the remaining gap between herself and the birthing stall as quietly as she could.

Before her, still slightly wet from her mother's dutiful bathing, was a spindly foal, legs spread wide as she tried to master her new legs. Leora's heart fluttered in excitement. "She's beautiful," she whispered to Jack, who grunted in agreement. Her eyes widened as she examined the small white patches on the filly's coat. "Look! She's got a heart on her right side!" she said excitedly, pointing and bouncing up and down like a little child. Jack grunted again but, when Leora looked at him, she could see his lips twitching as he held back a smile.

"We have to take pictures!" Leora said suddenly. "Oh I've forgotten my camera in the car, I'll be right back!" She darted off, leaving the Captain with Maddy and her new foal. Jack shook his head as a fond smile creased his wrinkled features. "Well, little girl, you've already got yourself quite the fan club," he mumbled, before looking at the tired, but happy, looking mare. "Good job Maiden. You've done me proud."
